President's Message

2007 was an exciting, challenging and fun- filled year and it looks like we are going to have a very similar 2008. Besides the wedding of our daughter Kate, we have some very exciting projects this year including a Fire Rescue boat for the Maui Fire Dept. as well as a custom 36' that will be powered by two Volvo IPS 600's.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our customers, family and friends a Happy New Year.

Anniversary

30th anniversary

We recently celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with a trip to San Francisco. We spent some time with our customers; the Costarellas and the Monks, as well as Josh and Sarah. We all went to a Dodgers - Giants game (the Dodgers lost).
Here are some photos from the trip - D & L

Engine care, part six:

Watch your exhaust

Watch your exhaust!

In your car, the manifold, exhaust pipe and muffler are mounted under the car and are cooled by air. The heat that they produce does not create a danger to your car.

However, most inboard engines, including inboard outdrives, have water cooled manifolds and risers to cool the exhaust. The water that cools the exhaust system comes from the water the boat is running in. As you know, salt water is very corrosive. It is important to make sure that the water-cooled exhaust system does not have leaks.

If you see any rust lines coming from between the manifold and riser on your engine, it is most likely time to replace the gasket. If you see an excessive amount of steam coming out of the exhaust, you may have an internal leak into the exhaust. In some cases, the water can get into the engine where it can do real damage. The moisture can enter the engine and rust the valves. In some cases, it can leak past the piston rings and get into the oil.

In the worst case scenario, the amount of moisture leaking into the cylinder can surpass the capacity of the combustion chamber. If that happens, the next time you go to start the engine it won't turn over and something can break. This may mean that your engine has water in the cylinders.

Here are some steps you can take to get your engine running again: turn off the water intake valve, turn the fuel valve off and remove the coil wire. Also remove all of the spark plugs; take precautions to make sure you can get the correct wire back onto the plugs. You can then crank the engine over to remove all of the water.

Once you have cranked the engine to remove the water, and you can see there is no water coming out of the cylinders, reverse the above procedure, turning the water valve on last. You can proceed to try to start the engine. In one instance, this procedure made it possible for our boat to return to the harbor under its own power as our boat had backfired and sucked water into its cylinders. If your engine has a substantial amount of water in the cylinders, take some oil and pour it into the cylinders. Crank the engine over to protect it until a marine mechanic can troubleshoot your engine's problem. If this procedure is outside of your area of expertise, and you suspect your engine has water in its cylinders, get your boat to a marine mechanic ASAP. The longer the water is in the cylinders, the more damage it will do.

Kate and Jeremy get engaged!

On January 19th, Jeremy proposed to Kate and she accepted. They are planning a small family wedding in Idaho. Jeremy's dad, Jeff, owns property in the Tamarack resort in Idaho, and they want to get married in that area. A few years back one of our 22' Radons was in a Chevy commercial which was filmed in the "Jaws" lake at Universal Studios. They hired Don as a "precision driver" with the stipulation that he shave his mustache.

In the commercial, he pulled the 22' Radon out of the water with a brand new Chevy pickup. The top photo shows Don sitting in the cart with a "talent" (?) sign next to him. The bottom photo shows the 22' in the lake.

It was an interesting and fun adventure for Don and Kate and they paid them to hang around Universal Studios!
